Holy shit. Chance the Rapper's phenomenally-produced mixtape has been talked about a lot since the Grammys just happened, and now he's just released a clip of a collaboration with Future. I was a late-comer to the Chance game, first listening to this mixtape, his third, a few months ago. 

This is the kind of recording that I immediately liked. Chance has catchy hooks and melodies interspersed with fucking amazing verses. The entire album is backed by equally fucking amazing beats produced by a bunch of familiar people, including Kaytranada (that makes sense - I love 99.9% too). Chance worked with a ton of artists for this recording too - Kanye West, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Justin Bieber, Future, Anderson .Paak and more.

This album is dynamic. It's got levels to it, from the anthemic "No Problem" to the smoother, Bon Iver-like "Summer Friends", to the simple gospel-jazz-hip hop track "Blessings". These kind of levels and difference of style is mature talent. His distinct and slightly raspy cadence is determined and easy - it's got momentum and it's articulate.

He's expertly used auto-tune on this album in a way that compliments tracks instead of overpowering. A great example of this is on "Finish Line/Drown". 

The other thing I love about this album is that it feels cohesive. Each track sounds different, but it feels like one movement. Chance is already exploding, but I think he's about to explode even more. I feel like this line from "Blessings" (the closing track, one of two on this album with the same name) perfectly explains Chance: "I never practice, I only perform."

Listen to this album. It's fucking great, I don't know what else to say.
