I am a huge Coldplay fan, and the first listen to the "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" single, I wasn't sure what to think. Now, I love the track. The band have said they are working on new music, but a new album title has yet to be released. In the meantime, they've teased us all with three tracks on the "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall EP", released earlier this week on iTunes and other digital forums.
Track Listing
- Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall
- Major Minus
- Moving to Mars
The title track of this EP sounds like a new, fresh, shiny Coldplay tune with all of the elements most of us love. Some positive, energetic, and motivating lyrics matched with some great guitar fills (and an awesome and unique little guitar riff that repeats between choruses, and I really like). It's another great concert track that manages to inspire you with the lyrics and also gets into your body by using a pounding and driving bass drum, similar to "Viva La Vida". It gets into your body and creates this amazing energetic drive to the track. It also makes for this feeling of celebration as the drums fill out more and pick up as the song progresses. I love it. Its exciting to hear new music from these guys!
"Major Minus", the second track on the EP reminds me of a mix of Coldplay, The Beatles and U2 (with the "Oooh, ooooh"s that come in periodically - Bono, anyone?) . I dig this tune too, although it hasn't stuck out to me as a song I can't stop playing.
The third track, "Moving to Mars" starts with a great throw-back to Parachutes, and the classic, piano-based Coldplay sound that broke them into the mainstream popularity. And then it picks up a bit, but is still based on some beautiful, slightly obscure but also very accessible lyrics about the instability of our planet, and the potential to live "past the satellites and stars".
If you are not interested in the entire EP, check out the title track anyway. Its another great feel good tune from Coldplay. And everyone leaves a feel-good tune.
Oh, and check out the awesome stop-motion video that matches the energy and vibrancy of "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall". Also very cool!
